Svaha: the time between seeing lightning and hearing the thunder
I will be eternally grateful for your great gift of taking in to the fullest extent what it is that I have to offer, living it, and then reflecting it back in terms of the potential experience of others. You have given words to a process that defies words. And you’re constantly in a position to help me continue to hone that, deeper and deeper and more and more resonantly, who I am and what I offer, which is truly invaluable. — Jon Hansen, The Remembering Room, Richmond, Illinois
What you’ve sent me is so darn perfect it hurts! It’s a sheer pleasure to work with someone who writes as beautifully as you do — and in “my” voice. — Ariane Goodwin, Ed.D, smARTist® Telesummit, Millers Falls, Massachusetts
You have a real gift for words. You’re really, really good at it. — Sherry Essig, Priority Ventures Group, Raleigh, North Carolina
You’ve built such integrity of message in your company. I know that’s because it springs forth intrinsically, but you stay so focused at your core! I can’t think of a better way to phrase that laser-beam focus you have. It’s funny, because in someone else, laser-beam focus would be intense, but somehow you manage to make it much more kind and easy. — Jessica Albon, Thrive Your Tribe, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
I’ve never worked with anybody in the way that I’ve worked with you in terms of trusting in your abilities to the level that I have. — Catherine Hajnal PhD, Eight Branches Consulting, Vancouver, Canada ... facilitating and nurturing joyful living
You have an uncanny ability to see through what is being said and surface all the “unsaid” issues. Then you quickly give candid feedback and have a tremendous toolbox to help me move forward through your expert guidance of the right tool.
I have worked with many facilitators/coaches/counselors relating to work and personal situations. Your skills are exemplary and moved me faster than I ever expected. — Jennifer Baker, Fishers, Indiana
You bring both a spiritual perspective and some real-world hard-headedness. — Janet Bailey, Mindful Time Management, San Francisco, California
Brava! I wish I could draw a picture of me — you’d see me in a deep bow to you!
I read your newsletter as soon as it hits my in-box and you’re always right on with your advice. I had to let you know that this issue is particularly brilliant.
I will definitely keep this info — and your contact info — in a secure place.
Thanks so much for sharing your insight and wisdom. — Debbie Rodgers, CGA
Like most successful businesspeople, you’re familiar with overwhelm. In fact, it seems to have moved in with you as a constant companion. You’ve considered setting a place for it at the dinner table — on those rare occasions when you actually have time to sit down to dinner, that is.
You keep working harder and harder and longer and longer and faster and faster. Social engagements are the first to go — you’ve got to find more time somewhere. Time with your family goes next, as you keep working away on crossing things off your list.
When you’re not in overwhelm, you try not to think about it. You’re sure there isn’t any way to avoid it. Just the thought of it is stressful and makes you feel worn out and panicky.
Cancelling your social engagements and cutting back on your family time creates frustration, resentment, and anger on all sides. It also decreases both your productivity and the quality of your work.
Meanwhile, ignoring the potential for overwhelm during those rare times when you’re not living with it is like ignoring your sunscreen because you’ve gotten up while it’s still dark: not very sensible, since overwhelm arrives almost as reliably as the sun rises.
That’s why having a guidebook is so useful. In five clear steps laid out for you, the first half of What Would Your Cat Do? Simple Steps to Overcome Overwhelm can lead you out of the overwhelm trap.
Once you’re out, you can take advantage of the second section. That’s where you’ll learn the surprising truth about what actually causes overwhelm (it’s not what you think it is!), and find out how to catch yourself before you start sliding down that slippery slope.

At first, to be honest, it all sounded very straightforward stuff. So I found it interesting to observe the, “Oh, I know that,” response in myself, followed by the realisation that, “If I know this already, why am I not doing something about it?”
And then, in listening more closely, to realise that I know only some of what I’m hearing.
To hear that other people experience the same things, and then to hear their variations on that experience was very instructive. I found it quite effective to listen to the discussion and question and answer in the recording. It has its own power to engage attention and consideration and understanding. Quite different from reading a page of text and thinking you’ve understood, while really you’ve just skimmed it and didn’t really get it. I think the realisation that you’ve not really taken something in is more obvious for the spoken word. It isn’t just a gimmick — the spoken word really complements the written word.
So it woke me up to the fact that I might need to pay closer attention to how well I am reading and listening. And thank you for putting in the work and organising these things. I’ve been learning more than I expected from just these few things of yours to date. Thank you!
- Alistair Langford, Canberra, ACT, Australia (after listening to the recording of a free teleclass on office politics; he also has a copy of What Would Your Cat Do: Simple Steps to Overcome Overwhelm)
A two-section, PDF-format workbook with detailed steps (including worksheets with examples) for getting out of overwhelm — and equally detailed steps for determining what puts you there in the first place. Armed with that knowledge, you’ll find that on the rare occasions when you do get overwhelmed, you’ll know how to get out quickly and stay out.
A 35-minute recording teaching the concepts, from a teleclass on the subject. This recording is especially useful for understanding the second section of the workbook, which covers how to recognize your unique triggers for overwhelm. (Premium offering.)
This section focuses on giving you what you need now, when you’re down there in the middle of overwhelm and wondering how you’re ever going to get it all done.
Once you’re out of overwhelm, it’s time to learn how to stay out!
The processes described in both Section I (“Out of the Frying Pan”) and Section II (“Banking the Flame”) are designed to be repeated whenever you find yourself in overwhelm, or are seeking deeper understanding of what overwhelm really means to you.
Therefore, I’ve extracted the worksheets into two PDF packages (one for each section) that you can print as many times as you need — without wasting paper and ink on pages you don’t want.
